spring flowers
I forgot to mention that Friday the 26th marked our first month in the apartment! It was a pretty insignificant day otherwise.
Today I went to A.C. Moore and picked up some craft supplies so I can finally move on to other projects. I've been wanting to make these flowers for months now but I never got around to it. It's been on my mind lately because of the spring weather and so it happened. I used this tutorial but used regular tissue paper instead of cupcake liners. Maybe next time. Mine are a little less full but I'm still very happy with the way they turned out.
Tomorrow I'm making more once I get a bigger vase and I'll throw our wine corks in there as well.

busy thoughts
My creative mind has been very busy lately but my hands have not. I made some clay beads a few days ago but they didn't turn out the way I had hoped so I'll try again soon. I have a lot of ideas but little patience right now.
I finally got a call from Urban Outfitters today and I start next Tuesday. Yay for money!
It's been rainy and chilly here lately. I think it'll turn around soon. But it is only April. We've just been so spoiled this spring.
Here are some pictures I've been meaning to post for a while now. The first is a set of ceramic containers that Tanner picked up at a thrift store a few months ago. They don't hold much now except some leftover Easter candy.
The other pictures are a tea pot and cup that my friend Michel sent me from Disney World. She also sent some Alice in Wonderland themed teas that Tanner and I tried a few nights ago.

rainy days
Another rainy day like yesterday, only slightly warmer due to humidity. I'm getting ready for another very lazy and crafty day. Maybe I'll work on those slippers from two weeks ago. Or maybe I'll just start more bunting. No matter what, there will be plenty of soup and hot chocolate and blanket snuggling as I sit on the couch watching Netflix. Oh, to be a cat.

just saturday
I've been getting lazy around here lately. Although not much has happened.
A few days ago Tanner put down some foam insulate in the giant crack that runs along the window wall in our living room. And then after he set out some ant killer goo. Hopefully we'll be free of our assorted creepy crawlers and possible drafts. It looks so much better and I really can't believe it didn't cross any one's mind to fill that before we moved in.
I've been slowly working on the fabric bunting for the kitchen. Cutting out all the pieces was the most tedious part. The sewing is going quicker than before, which is great. I have more crafts in mind but I can't get ahead of myself or else nothing will get done.
The weather has been trying so hard to warm up! The trees are starting to bloom. The wind, however, is a little too enthusiastic.

the last few days
The weather has been incredible lately! Very warm and sunny. I went to the beach on Saturday and collected some shells and sea glass. I have project ideas but I just need to find the motivation. There were several other people doing the same (it made me feel like an old lady). It was windy but not terribly. I watched one gull pick up a clam and drop it from about ten feet in the air onto the rocks. I don't think it worked out.
My mom came to visit on Sunday before Tanner got back from work. Monday morning, which happened to be Patriot's Day, we drove north to Freeport to check out the huge L.L. Bean stores. Turns out Freeport is a very wealthy town that caters to the same. In the biggest store we found a little trout aquarium with a little viewing bubble for children. The fish were huge and Tanner and I had fun with it. And then outside there was a giant boot!
The last store we visited before leaving Freeport had bunches of dried flowers hanging from every inch of the low ceiling and it smelled wonderful! There were seeds and garden trinkets and some stationary and napkins. Tanner and I decided that we're going to start collecting dried flowers and hanging them in our apartment. I can't wait!
When we got back to Portland we ate at DiMillo's, the floating restaurant, and watched this guy buffing a boat at the dock right next to us. We were trying to see if he was wearing black socks or special thin shoes. It was fun. Then Tanner went to work and my mom and I went grocery shopping and then relaxed in the apartment for the rest of the night. This morning she and I went to the Old Port and walked around so she could get a feel for it. we stopped in East End Cupcakes on our way out and she bought us a couple cupcakes that Tanner and I have yet to eat, which is amazing. Then Tanner and I did a little shopping and I picked up some fabric to make more bunting for the apartment. I mostly grabbed earthy greens, blues, oranges, and browns. A little red, too. I'll post pictures once I finish!

lazy day
Today we decided to have a lazy day, which is appropriate because it's been raining. Although now the sun is peeking out a bit. We made smoothies earlier (mango, banana, raspberry, vanilla yogurt) and now we're playing Super Mario Galaxy.
Tanner starts work tomorrow and I'll sit at home like a doting house wife.
yesterday we got our last piece of major furniture- an entertainment "center". We found a bureau type thing with a cupboard and three deep drawers. The massive TV goes on top and the game systems are in the cupboard. It's so great to have the TV off the floor and no more mess of wires and controllers. We got it at the thrift store down the street from us for $55. It was originally $65. The last thing we need is a coffee table which Tanner will probably end up making sometime when he goes home.

a little balancing
Today was a very grown up day for me and Tanner. He reached out to Trader Joe's and was hired. We went to city hall and paid our excise tax even though we're still a little unsure what it is. Then we went back to the BMV and Tanner got his license while I got new plates, a license, and changed my registration. Woah. And expensive. But now we're officially Maine residents. I got the lobster license plates because, why not? Now Betty's bum is even more colorful.
After a late lunch we went on a hunt for a TV stand with shelves and possibly cupboards for hiding Tanner's many controllers and games. We had some luck and eventually found a great place in South Portland that we'll check out tomorrow when they're open. While there Tanner climbed his two trees (one for yesterday and one for today) in this cute little park across from the Hannafords. There was a small pond with an assortment of birds and a gazebo, too. Under a couple of the trees we found miniature twig houses and lean to's. I should have taken pictures, they were very cute.

good news
Today Tanner officially became employed by Trader Joe's and starts working this Friday! At least one of us will be making some money. Now if only I could hear back today...
I posted pictures from Easter on my Flickr.
And I finally took pictures of the apartment!
Into the kitchen from the side door.
More of the kitchen.
From the fridge into our bedroom.
The closet and our little nook.
From the bed through the kitchen into the living room.
Bathroom, second bedroom, closet.
From the bathroom door.
From the bathroom window into the living room.
Living room windows and Tanner playing Call of Duty.
The second bedroom, from the door.
It's mostly a storage room right now.

vacationland
We had a late start today but who knows how long we'll be able to laze around for hours while the city goes to work. We made a quick trip to the DMV (here it's called the BMV) but learned we had much to do before changing everything over and so we'll go to Town Hall tomorrow and then back to the BMV to become Maine drivers!
So instead of being adults we drove a little south to Cape Elizabeth and Tanner threw back some unfinished sea glass back into the water and I took a few pictures. It was a tiny beach area and very rocky, almost like small cliffs, on either side. It was cloudy but the sun peeked through and made the water very blue and sparkly. It was a beautiful scene.
Just off the beach was a little restaurant called The Lobster Shack where Tanner ate his first lobster! We shared a lobster dinner, which was plenty, and had a great and messy time. The view was incredible. We decided that sometime this summer we'll go back to watch the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean. It will be almost as cold as beautiful.
Then afterwards we went into South Portland to watch Titanic in 3D. I think we both had a good time. The movie definitely wasn't made for 3D viewing but there were some great (and scary) scenes where it worked. We also talked a lot. We may have been a bit obnoxious but there weren't too many people there anyways.
When we got back to the apartment I saw a cat lurking around my car and I asked Tanner if we could stop to look for it. We eventually found the cat who was very tiny, dark colored and so fluffy. We kept calling it over and it got a little closer then backed off. When we inside to get some granola to crunch up for it, the cat came closer to our door but we scared it off when we went back out. It ran across the street and I've been calling for it every now and then. I guess it's for the best; I'd probably get too attached anyway.
I wanted to post some pictures of the blanket I finished crocheting last week. It's huge and I'm really happy with the way it turned out, even though it's bunchy in places and then really loose. Oh well. I had to start somewhere.

happy easter!
This has been such a fun and productive weekend!
Tanner got back Friday afternoon and after bringing his stuff inside we went down to the Catholic Charities thrift store to check out the couches and bed frame. The one couch we both really liked smelled to much like old cigarettes and we couldn't do it. But then we found another. It's a little bigger than a traditional love seat and it's a grey blue with little yellow flowers on it. It was $45 and came with four small pillows. Ours! We loaded it in the back of Tanner's car (it barely fit) and went back to the apartment. We then went immediately back to the thrift store to pick up the bed frame with the bookshelf headboard. It was $75, down from $90 when it first got there. We felt good about it. We took it apart, got it in the car, picked up dinner, and went back to the apartment. Success!
Liz got here Saturday midday and we went to the last hour of the farmer's market which was still indoors (at the Maine Irish Heritage Center). Liz picked up some cheese spreads and a pesto spread. Tanner and I got raspberry jam, apple cider, three apples, a jar of honey and honey sticks. On April 28th they'll be outside in Monument Square which is very close to our apartment and I can't wait!
We did some errands, bought dinner and snacks and went back to the apartment. I boiled the eggs for decorating and Liz and I filled our plastic eggs with candy for the Easter egg hunt we had today. We ate so much last night and went to bed with full tummies, excited about more candy in the morning!
We decided that each person would get their own room to hunt for eggs and the remaining two would hide for them. It was almost more fun hiding than searching. After we collected our loot and started munching we decorated our eggs!
After much sugar we went downtown even though most stores were closed and got breakfast in a little cafe. It started snowing a little. Sad. It stopped then rained a bit. We went in a few stores but then drove the beach and walked along the shore for over an hour. We saw lots of sea glass (Tanner picked some up for his mom), blue shells, crazy rocks, one little snail and even some chalk. It was very windy and cold but we had a great time exploring things among the rocks. Liz had a wonderful time smashing rocks to find fossils and then she and Tanner skipped stones for a while. On the way back to the car Tanner climbed a tree and then we took Liz back to the bus station. Now we're being lazy (and cold) but happy with our day and ready to eat our candy!
