city by the sea

Lately I've been more aware of this city I live in and all of its quirks. To be fair, Tanner and I have really only explored the Old Port and the beach. We've been to other areas but we haven't really experienced them. I think it would be accurate to say that we don't really know Portland yet. Recently I've noticed on my way to work how alive the city is at certain times of the day. We're only a block and a half from a busy section of town and another three blocks from the Old Port but it amazes me how many people are out and about at 10 or 11 in the morning. Maybe it's also just that I haven't lived in a city in a very long time.

I've also been noticing lately how much the bay comes inland. The gulls are absolutely everywhere and I hear and see them at all hours and places. I'll hear them at work in between songs and remember how close I am to the ocean. The ocean. There are a few places on my walk to work when I can see the harbor in the distance and the nasty fish/sea smell reaches my nose. Okay, it isn't usually gross but lately it has been. I love at those moments remembering what I love about this city that I live in and the reasons why I wanted to come here. I just hope I feel the same way once winter comes.
